Melatonin, the primary hormone of the pineal gland, acts as a powerful "chronobiotic" that helps maintain normal circadian rhythms.* In individuals who have difficulty sleeping or altered circadian rhythms, such as occurs in jet lag and night shift work, supplementation with melatonin promotes the resynchronization of those cycles.* The body’s synthesis of melatonin from the amino acid tryptophan decreases during aging process. Melatonin has a significant antioxidant activity.* Adequate melatonin levels have been reported to be a positive factor in cardiovascular, neuroendocrine, and bone health.*

Melatonin administration from 0.3 mg to 5.0 mg has been shown to exert a sedative-like effect.* When supplemented before the onset of the body’s normal melatonin secretion, even a low amount of melatonin can promote sleep.* Melatonin apparently increases the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) via direct interaction with GABA receptors, thus resulting in relaxation.* Research indicates melatonin exerts sleep-promoting action by decreasing the amount of time to fall asleep, by improving the ability to stay asleep, and by enhancing the depth of sleep.* Thorne Research's Melaton-3 supplies three mg of melatonin in each capsule, a strength that is ideal for individuals who only need a moderate amount of melatonin to be effective.*
